If you have curly hair, you likely know there is a fine line between beautiful curls and untamable frizz. While factors beyond your control, such as the weather, can play a role, there are some things you can do to keep your mane under control.
Look for Natural Products
It’s a good idea to use more natural products on your hair, such as a mask with eggs, olive oil, and mayonnaise. These ingredients are highly hydrating since curly hair tends to be drier. You can also try avocados, since they have a lot of good fats and vitamins. Mash honey and an avocado together with some olive oil, and leave it on your hair for half an hour before washing. You could also look into using castor oil, especially if you want to promote natural hair growth. It supports the scalp, skin, eyelashes, lips, and nails – all in one beauty staple. Utilizing castor oil for your hair tends to be softer and shinier. You can purchase the product easily.
Choose the Right Products
Washing regularly will ensure there is no excess oil, dust, or product buildup near the scalp. Still, it is best to avoid doing so too often, as you can strip away the natural oils. On days when you do not wash, you can still give your locks a rinse to remove dust and pollution from the day. When you do wash, use a mild shampoo that does not have silicones, sulfates, or other products that could lead to scalp irritation. You can also try to do a treatment before washing, since it can remove frizz and help detangle. Afterward, add conditioning oil or a mask. You can put a shower cap over it to ensure the conditioner gets into each strand. Then you can do a quick rinse to remove the conditioner, unless it is a leave-in variety.
Being Gentle
Because curly hair can be drier and more brittle, on top of being susceptible to other common hair problems, it is critical to be gentle in your care. For example, use moderate heat instead of high heat when styling. Higher temperatures can remove the curls’ texture, causing them to look lifeless and dull. It’s also a good idea to limit how often you use heat at all. There are heat protectant sprays, and consider using a diffuser. Using a wide-toothed comb is another way to protect your locks when removing tangles. Never brush curls, as it can lead to frizz and breakage. Start at the bottom to get the knots out, and work your way up to the top. That way, you aren’t ripping the strands. Because each curl has a breaking point, it’s best to be extremely gentle.
Use cold water when washing as well. Hot water can strip the scalp’s natural oils away, leaving your hair more prone to breakage and dryness. And hot water can also open your hair’s cuticle, so new strands will be more likely to break. Use the coolest water you can stand when showering, and rinse the strands with cold water once you are finished.
